Story:
Experience a typical day for Dr. Shomari Olden on one of Ochsner Health?s COVID-19 units and witness the lives of 4 patients battling COVID-19: Meet Dawn: Just four days after receiving her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, Dawn contracted COVID-19 and spent 20 days on Ochsner?s COVID-19 unit. She was then displaced from her home after damage and mold from Hurricane Ida and plans to receive her second dose of the Pfizer vaccine after getting settled back into her home. Dawn says she hopes her story will inspire others to choose vaccination. Meet Steven: Steven spent 35 days on Ochsner?s COVID-19 unit after several days of receiving therapy in the ICU to facilitate his breathing by pushing air into his lungs. Steven was found to have deep vein thrombosis and now takes a blood thinner. He is still in respiratory therapy and requires home oxygen. Steven?s dog survived Hurricane Ida alone, and the two are now reunited at home. Steven received his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine shortly after discharge and is scheduled for his second at the time of this production. Meet Anthony: Anthony spent 36 days on the Ochsner COVID-19 unit shortly after receiving his first dose of the vaccine. He and his wife both contracted COVID-19, however his wife was fully vaccinated and experienced much milder symptoms that she could manage at home. Anthony still experiences shortness of breath with activity. He says, ?If my story encourages at least one person to get vaccinated, I?ll be happy.? Meet Matthew: Matthew spent 29 days in Ochsner?s COVID ICU, including his 38th birthday. He was discharged a week after his birthday to an inpatient rehabilitation facility. He is currently recovering at home with assistance from his two teenage sons, and his confusion has cleared. He now walks with a cane and a walker and is progressing with the help of a physical therapist.
